There she is Miss America 2019 – Nia Imani Franklin

Nia Imani Franklin, Miss New York, was crowned the 92nd Miss America during the 2019 Miss America pageant event held in Atlanta City, New Jersey. Franklin, 24-year-old also won a $50,000 college scholarship in the first Miss America pageant to be held without a swimsuit competition. Franklin's social platform is advocating for the arts.

Franklin who is a Winston-Salem native earned a master’s degree in music composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She completed her undergraduate degree in music composition at East Carolina University.

During her talent portion of the pageant, Franklin a classical vocalist sang Puccini’s “Quando m’en vo”. Also known as "Musetta's Waltz", it is a soprano aria, a waltz in act 2 of Puccini's opera La bohème.

Franklin said,

“I want America to see that classical music is still alive and thriving, especially that an African American woman is singing opera. Because there’s so many kids out there that don’t know that they can do classical music.”

According to the pageant organization, the Miss America Organization, Franklin's win marks the seventh title for New York, the most of any state in the pageant’s nearly 100-year history.

Franklin earned a master’s degree in music composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She completed her undergraduate degree in music composition at East Carolina University.
