Khaira Arby, Malian Diva of the Desert, has died at 59

Khaira Arby, Malian Diva of the Desert, has died. She died on Sunday in Bamako, Mali’s capital at the age of 59. Her death was announced by her American tour manager, Christopher Nolan, who said that she died in a Bamako hospital. The cause of her death was not disclosed. Her family told the AFP that she was buried on Monday.

Through marriage, Arby was related to one of Africa's biggest stars, the late Grammy-winning guitarist, Ali Farka Touré with whom she performed in concert. She was affectingly called the “Nightingale of Timbuktu” and the “Diva of the Desert”. Her most popular album was “Timbuktu Tarab,” released in 2010.
